Rural Lines

Rural Lines is a series of paintings that work to examine the architectural vernacular of the Southeast. Buildings that were abandoned and left to decay are given life and illuminated both metaphorically and by natural light. The paintings serve as a type of recording of history, the retelling and close examination of what was into what is as translated by the artist.

Architectural elevations are a classic mode of communication for architects. In these paintings, the abstract compositions simplify views in elevation format. A facade is flattened and abstracted to serve as a primary element in the composition conveying a sense of mass and volume. Large geometric shapes are formed from dominant shadows raking across a surface. With details purposefully omitted in the composition, the viewer is left to question its function and how it served its occupants.
